Clipping or UGC: which one to choose

Both approaches go through creators and produce vertical video. Yet they answer opposite needs. Here's how to decide.

Clipping or UGC: which one to choose

Two production logics

UGC creates new content, clipping multiplies existing content.

With UGC, a creator shoots an original video featuring your product. They film, talk, test, recommend. Each video is a production, with a brief, a shoot, an approval and a lead time. With clipping, no camera is switched on. Clippers start from material you already own, a podcast, a talk, a live stream, an interview, and cut it into dozens of short formats posted on their own accounts. The distinction is not cosmetic. UGC produces social proof for a product, clipping produces distribution surface for a message. An e-commerce brand launching a sunscreen needs UGC. A founder who speaks well and wants to be seen needs clipping.

Volume and cost

The volume gap between the two approaches is an order of magnitude.

A classic UGC campaign produces ten to fifty videos a month, billed per piece, usually €80 to €400 excl. VAT each depending on the creator's profile. You pay for production whether the video performs or not, and distribution is usually on you through paid. A clipping campaign produces several hundred to several thousand clips over the same period, billed only on the views obtained. The consequence is simple: with UGC, every miss costs you money. With clipping, a clip that doesn't break through costs you nothing, and only what works is billed. That's what makes clipping structurally better suited to testing and fast iteration.

How to decide

The right criterion isn't budget, it's the material you already have.

Ask yourself three questions. Do you already have usable long-form content, at least ten hours? If not, clipping has nothing to cut and UGC is your starting point. Does your subject rest on someone speaking, on expertise, on a personality? If so, clipping is far more effective, because what circulates organically is an idea, not a product demo. Do you need control over every asset? If your industry requires legal approval on every post, clipping becomes hard to run and UGC stays easier to manage. In practice, the most established brands use both: UGC to feed paid and the product page, clipping for awareness and the founder's authority.
