Measuring a clipping campaign: what really counts

Hundreds of clips posted on accounts that aren't yours: how do you know what a clipping campaign really produced? Certified views, real cost per view, engagement, impact on your brand: here are the metrics to track and the traps to avoid.

Measuring a clipping campaign: what really counts

Why is measuring a clipping campaign different?

Because your videos aren't posted on your accounts, but on those of dozens of clippers.

When a brand posts on its own social accounts, it has its stats one click away. When it buys ads, the platform provides a full dashboard. Clipping fits neither box. Clips circulate on hundreds of TikTok, Instagram and YouTube accounts that don't belong to you, run by independent creators you don't know.

That's precisely what makes the format strong: videos land in the feed as organic content, not as ads. We explain this in detail in our comparison clipping or video ads. But it's also what makes measurement tricky. Without a method, you end up with screenshots sent by message, numbers impossible to cross-check and no idea of what really worked.

Measuring a clipping campaign therefore means answering three questions, in this order. Are the views announced real? How much did each one cost you? And what did they produce for your brand?

What is a certified view?

A view that was checked before being counted, and therefore before being billed.

It's the starting point of any serious measurement. In a pay-for-results model, every view has a value. On the clipper side, the temptation to inflate numbers exists: bought accounts, artificial views, edited stats. An agency that simply passes on the numbers declared by clippers is potentially billing you for nothing.

At Virality®, that's the role of the AntiBotSystem®. Declared views go through checks, suspicious views are rejected and not billed, certified views are counted. Checks happen at three levels: AI checks on the Hub®, manual review of reports and random checks by screen recording. Only certified views count towards your target.

Whatever agency you're talking to, ask before signing: how are views verified, and who pays for a fraudulent view? If the answer is vague, the rest of the reporting isn't worth much. It's one of the criteria in our guide to choosing a clipping agency.

Which metrics to track during the campaign?

Views first, but never on their own.

Certified views. This is the contractual metric, the one the guarantee covers. Track their progress against the target, week after week. A healthy campaign rises steadily, with spikes when a clip takes off.

Number of clips posted. It tells you whether the campaign has breadth. As a benchmark, our Traction pack represents around 200 clips for 1M guaranteed views, and the Growth pack around 500 clips for 3M views. Few clips and many views means one or two pieces carry everything. Many clips and few views means the material or the chosen angles aren't landing.

View distribution. Look at how views are spread across clips and across accounts. A campaign resting on three accounts is fragile. A wide distribution proves several angles work, and that the campaign doesn't depend on a lucky break.

Engagement. Likes, comments, shares. They aren't billed, but they tell you how the audience receives your content. Shares in particular signal a clip that travels beyond the audience it first reached. Read the comments too: they teach you what people take away from your content, often better than a study.

Platforms. The same content doesn't perform the same way on TikTok, Reels and Shorts. Compare the three to find out where your audience is, and adjust the next campaign accordingly.

How to calculate the real cost of a view?

By dividing what you pay by the certified views obtained. Nothing else.

Clipping is sold on a CPM basis, meaning the price per 1,000 views. At Virality®, the Traction pack guarantees 1M views for €3,000 excl. VAT, a CPM of €3 excl. VAT. The Growth pack guarantees 3M views for €8,700 excl. VAT, a CPM of €2.90 excl. VAT. Pricing details and what makes them vary are explained in our article on the cost of a clipping campaign.

To compare with other levers, bring everything back to the same metric. A monthly retainer with no view commitment has no CPM known in advance: you only find out at the end, by dividing the price by the views obtained. A guaranteed-view model sets that number at signing. If you add production with ViralContent®, include it in the calculation: production first, distribution next, and the total divided by certified views.

Beware of comparisons that mix definitions. An ad view, an impression and an organic view lasting several seconds aren't worth the same. Each platform has its own rules for counting a view: compare campaigns measured the same way.

By preparing measurement before launch, not after.

Clipping is first and foremost a visibility lever. It puts a name, a face, a show in the feed of millions of people. Its effects are therefore often read indirectly. Here are the signals to watch, provided you note their level before the campaign starts.

Searches for your name. When a campaign works, people search for the brand, the show or the person they saw. Track searches for your name in Google Search Console and on the platforms themselves.

Your own accounts. Followers gained, views on your content, messages received. An audience that discovers your clips often ends up looking for the source.

Traffic and conversions. Site visits, sign-ups, downloads, sales. A tracked link or a campaign-specific code, when the framework allows, helps attribute part of the results. It will never capture all of them: many people see a clip, then come back later another way.

The source's audience. For a podcast, a show or a live stream, look at episode listens and live attendance. That's often where the effect of clipping shows most clearly, as we detail in our guides to podcast clipping and clipping for streamers.

How to read a clipping report without being fooled?

By demanding detail, clip by clip, and following it in real time.

A good report lets you see what was posted, on which account, and with what performance. A three-number monthly summary lets you neither check nor understand what works. At Virality®, every view is certified and tracked on the Hub®: you see clips come in one by one, and views, likes, comments and shares evolve live.

Four reflexes to read a report, whatever the tool.

Separate declared views from certified views. Only certified views should be billed. A large gap between the two isn't bad news: it proves the checks work.

Look at the best clips, not just the total. The few top-performing clips tell you which moments, angles and hooks speak to your audience. That's the material for your next campaign. Our article on content that really clips gives pointers for analysing them.

Follow the pace, not just the finish. A campaign that hits its target in one week and one that hits it in two months don't have the same effect on the brand.

Check the framework was respected. Mandatory mentions, authorised sequences, music rights: measurement also covers the quality of what was posted in your name.

What happens if the view target isn't reached?

At Virality®, the budget is kept and the balance of views goes to your Wallet®.

Views are guaranteed by contract. If a campaign stops before the target, the missing views aren't lost: they carry over to your next campaign via the Wallet®. It's also a metric to watch: a large balance on the Wallet® signals that the material provided or the angles of the next campaign need rethinking.

Where to start?

Set your benchmarks before launch, then let the campaign produce enough clips for the numbers to mean something.

Note your starting level of brand searches, followers and traffic. Choose a view target that is realistic given your material. Decide what you'll look at every week, and what you'll judge at the end. That's how Virality®, the #1 French clipping agency, works: a guaranteed view target, views certified by the AntiBotSystem® and live tracking on the Hub®.
